I don’t have anything lovely to show you today because for the last 48 hours I have been covered in bleach and deck stain. The hubs and I have started our fall project a little early to get ready for football season. We love to put a TV outside on Saturdays and grill while we cheer on our favorite teams.
This deck has been a project for the last two years. It was the first very big DIY thing my husband really ever attempted alone. We had two great friends of ours who are also contractors come out and draw the plans up for us as well as give us a huge head start. He and my Dad put most of it together and then he got stuck on one set of stairs…..for about a year. I am so proud of him for getting back out there over the past few months and finishing it up, all by himself. I have before pictures but I am going to save them for the day when I get this done and decorated so you can see just how much we did on our own.
The big challenge of the weekend was to get this deck stained and sealed. We went to our local Lowe’s and got this brochure from Olympic……..
One day??? I think not.
We got up bright and early on Saturday, ready to hit the ground running and to start cleaning. It took a lot more cleaner than we thought it would, 3 trips back to Lowe’s to be exact. We used the Olympic deck cleaner that was recommended and it did a fantastic job. It ate through all of the dirt and debris and it made the deck look as though we had just layed it down.
After it dried, it had a very bleached out appearance but it took the stain beautifully.
We thought we would get to the staining on Saturday but it literally took all day to get it to a point where we were comfortable putting on the stain. We didn’t want any variation in the wood and we had several areas that were “striped” from the cleaner going on to heavy. By the time we got it done it was too dark to get anything else accomplished.
Sunday after church we were able to start staining. The hubs thought it would only take a few hours but given the hundreds of chairs that I have painted with spindles, I knew that was going to be the most time consuming part. This was my job….the spindles.
I started off SO excited because I absolutely loved the color and I was dreaming of what I was going to do with the furniture, what fabrics I was going to use for pillows and how I would decorate for football.
Somewhere between hour 1 and hour 8, the 100 mosquito bites and a body covered in sweat and brown stain, I went from here…………..
HA! I had no idea he has captured me like that. My true feelings obviously overflowed onto my face.
AH…..the joy of the Lord is my strength! Help me Lord, I will get this completed this week!
We almost finished the spindles and we still have to do the floors…..before it rains. YIKES!
I am headed to the Lake to take the girls for one last Hoorah before school starts on Wednesday. I’ll be back tomorrow for Restored It Wednesday. Have a great Monday everybody!
