CHALK PAINT Q&A AND MY DINING ROOM BUFFET

Hello my lovelies! I hope today has been a great Monday for you! I didn’t quite know what to do with myself. I have a list a mile long, but both my kids were out of school and my husband is on furlough. It felt like Saturday……….Although not much was accomplished we had a good time together. Yesterday, while we were at the lake for Easter, my oldest was itching to get her toes in the water for the first time this spring. The lake was still a little nippy but she didn’t care…….she LOVES to be in the water. Apparently so do her glasses. Last July 4th we lost a pair to the lake and yesterday another one bit the dust. She SWEARS they were on her towel, but when she got out they weren’t there. I think she probably jumped in with them on and didn’t realize it. Buying a new pair of glasses is almost as bad as having to replace your washing machine or or new brakes for your car …..A few hundred bucks that could have been spent on something more fun feels like it was just money down the toilet. Oh well……it could be worse. So that’s what we did today as a family…hung out at Lens Crafters.

I wanted to answer a few of your chalk paint questions. So far I have 4….So here we go……

HOW DO YOU WAX WITH A BRUSH?

This is not actually a chalk paint question but you should wax your piece when you are done painting with chalk paint. The finish is really flat and well…..chalky feeling…until you wax.  I use an Italian waxing brush that I purchased from Karen at Chalk Paint USA. It’s my favorite brush EVER.  I’ve only used Johnson’s Paste Wax with it so far but I just bought some new TLC wax, thanks to some of you SWEET readers who let me know where to find it, and Briwax that I will try when I get back next week.

HOW DOES IT WORK ON LATEX GLOSS PAINT?
SUPERB! You can paint over almost anything glossy including gloss latex paint, varnish even plastic!

IS IT WORTH THE MONEY?

Ya’ll, they are not giving me or paying me anything to tell you this. I paid for this paint, just like most of you. To me, it is totally worth it. I hate and despise sanding and priming.  With this paint, I don’t have to do any of these things. Time is worth money to me because I am selling my pieces. I can get about 3 pieces out of one quart so that is about 12.50 per project. If you’ve gotten your furniture really cheap, you should still be fine on profit.

WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR PAINT?

I have gotten all of my chalk paint and supplies from Karen at Chalk Paint USA. She is super sweet and very willing to help you with whatever you need.
And thank you Vicki for pointing out the fact that there are now 12 stockists in the US  and you may even be lucky enough to have one near you where you can sign up for a workshop. You can find a stockist near you at www.joliedesign.com.
If you have more questions, feel free to email me!

I also wanted to show you some re arranging I did in my dining room. I had to find a new home for my 80.00 Hepplewhite Buffet and I think it looks great under the window in my dining room. I also brought home my iron lamps from Urban Green. The rust was coming off, they needed to be sealed and I ended up white washing them. I liked them so much I kept them!

I am still looking for the right chairs to go around my table. I think I found them in some shield backs that I snagged for 10 bucks a piece. They will soon be painted in old white and distressed, followed by a drop cloth skirt…..

Maybe one day I will get one room TOTALLY done……

  1. Great post. Your beautiful sea shell display piece gave me a great idea – footed small glass cookie/candy dishes – add sea shells. Maybe that will help them 'leave the booth' for a new home.
    Thanks.

  7. I JUST changed my diningroom around last week and put my buffet in front of the window too but I was on the fence about it and now that I see yours, I think it looks great! My buffet is staying!

  9. I would love to try this wonderful chalk paint I keep hearing about but I want to use it on some dining room chairs that will be used all day long. Will the chalk paint and wax work on chairs or will the wax make them sticky when sat upon?
