This project was a colaborated effort! We knocked out a wall in our kitchen when we first moved in…I will show you pictures later… and I had absolutly no counter space and zero money to purchase an island that I wanted. My sister works for a huge construction company here in Birmingham and they built the UAB Womens and Infants Center that just opened up this year. Oh… how I wish I had a before picture of my cabinet! It kinda makes me a little sick because this is a HUGE revamp. When the company layed out a display of cabinets for the hospital to choose from, they had demos left over that they just gave away. SO, I got a great bottom and top cabinet for free!!! It was laminate and an ugly hospital maple color. Mom and I layed out a design in our head, put it on paper and then put my sweet daddy to work. We bought wains coating, big corbals and of course our angled 2″ Purdy Paintbrush. The feet mom and I purchased at an Estate Sale years ago and I am SO glad we saved them!!!
We put the entire cabinet on a worktable and covered the three raw sides with wainscoating. Then, we trimmed it out with flat trim. We drilled the holes in the bottom for the feet and just screwed them in. We used our Purdy paint brushes to prime and paint several coats of Dove White by Benjamin Moore.
Years ago my grandfather build our lake cabin out of reclaimed wood and other various found materials. He saved a lot of the wood under the shed and we brought it home, ran it through the planer and then stained it a dark walnut. We used several coats of Poly for protection.
I still have the original hardware on it. You can see the “Hopital” look in them can’t you? I am still searching for the perfect ones. They are REALLY wide. I may end up having to fill the holes and start over.
I am really excited to be sharing this in this fabulous DIY contest!
